Jane (Janie) Riley, LMFT (she/her)

Bio and Credentials

I began my career 25 years ago as a volunteer hotline counselor for TALK-Line (Telephone Aid in Living with Kids). I knew immediately that I was entering the right field. Talking to people about the most intense, heart-wrenching, and meaningful moments of their lives felt like the best way I could spend my livelihood. During my education and training, I studied and practiced several therapeutic approaches. Today, my work is grounded in psychoanalytic thinking and influenced by my diverse interests. Most importantly, I have been devoted to my own path of personal growth throughout my career, something that enlivens and anchors me daily.

I completed my psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC), where I am also a faculty member. I hold a Master's degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), where I also studied Buddhism and other contemplative traditions. My practice reflects my integrative foundation: I draw on psychoanalysis, somatic approaches, family systems, and mindfulness and awareness practices to offer a depth of context for our work together.

My clinical background is broad. I have worked in community and school settings, directed a clinical and peer counseling program for WORLD and the Family Care Network in Oakland, and maintained a private practice. I also have taught and supervised interns and students in a variety of community-based settings including The Psychotherapy Institute (TPI), The Pacific Center, the Northern California Society for Professional Psychology (NCSPP), Bay Area Community Resources (BACR), and New Leaf Counseling Center in SF.
